Have a young athlete who sees coaching as part of their future in hockey?
The Future Coach Development Program has been created to give young people who are genuinely interested in coaching the opportunity to gain real experience and start developing those skills before their minor hockey years are even over.
Open to U13–U18-aged current and former MJMH players, participants will be paired with a team in a younger division (U7–U13) and work alongside an experienced Head Coach who will serve as their mentor throughout the season.
This is not a stick boy or door-opening role.
Future Coaches will be given the opportunity to learn what coaching actually involves — practice planning, running drills, player development, communication, leadership, team management and game-day responsibilities — while gaining practical experience working directly with younger athletes.
The program is designed to grow with each participant. As their knowledge, confidence and abilities develop, so will their involvement. A Future Coach may begin by participating in evaluations and assisting during practices, progress to taking responsibility for drills and portions of practices, and ultimately have the opportunity to take on greater game-day coaching responsibilities under the guidance of their mentor.
The long-term goal is to create a real pathway from player to coach.
For a young person who already knows coaching is something they may want to pursue — whether as a volunteer, at the competitive level or even as a future career — this is an opportunity to start learning now, gain meaningful experience and be mentored by someone already doing the job.
